Are you
nervous when you stand in front of other people and forget everything? When you
are alone, do you perform better and do you feel less efficient in front of
others? But according to the results of the study, being watched makes people
do better.
The California Institute of Technology
organized the study and 20 participants (mean age, 24.5; age range 19–32; 7
females) participated in motor experiments. They completed a task and were paid
a small amount of money according to their work situation. This task is a video
game similar to the Wii or Xbox Kinect. Participants performed tasks in front
of two audiences and no one watched. Using functional magnetic resonance
imaging to monitor their brain activity.
When participants know that the audience
is watching, part of the prefrontal cortex associated with social cognition,
especially other people's thoughts and intentions, activates with another part
of the cortex associated with the reward. These signals together trigger the
activity of the ventral striatum, a brain area that stimulates motor and motor
skills. When people are watched, the average score of participants in video
games increased by 5% and increased as much as 20%. Only two participants performed
poorly in front of others.
The appearance of the audience, at least
a small part, increases the motivation for people to perform well. However, if
the audience is more numerous and the risk is higher, the result may be the
opposite.
This research is very interesting. I
have also been afraid to stand in front of people and have forgotten what I
wanted to say. I thought that standing in front of audience would ruin my
performance. But it was opposite. Having some audience lead your better
performance.
Do you want
to improve your performance? How about practicing in front of your audience
from today?
I think it's good that you share your experience and thought in the article. The advice is useful as well!

Interesting topic!
回覆刪除I feel the same too.l think many people have been in this situation and this article provides a good advice .
Interesting article and also quite easy to understand. I like that you shared your own experience in there, makes it alot more relatable.
回覆刪除I think this kind of phenomenon is referred to as "social facilitation: in psychology. However, I do think it depends on the task at hand. If it is a simple and easy task then maybe an audience can enhance performance but if it is something more difficult then that may cause a bit of nervousness and poor performance
